The Browns were already without running back Nick Chubb on Sunday because of a calf injury. Now, it appears that they have lost Kareem Hunt as well.

Hunt suffered a calf injury early in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ 37-14 loss against the Cardinals, as Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed. He went down as the Browns attempted to convert a fourth-and-4 in the red zone.

Hunt had to be helped off the field and couldn’t put any weight on his right leg. He was carted off the field after getting to the sideline and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that he would not return to the game.

The Browns provided an update about Hunt’s status on Monday afternoon. Stefanski confirmed that Hunt will be out for several weeks with a calf injury. He will probably go in IR, as the “rough estimate” of Hunt’s absence is 4-6 weeks, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Hunt entered Sunday’s game banged up as he dealt with wrist and knee injuries that kept him out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He logged a limited practice on Friday and Stefanski said that he didn’t want to overwork Hunt.

“I don’t want to kill Kareem,” Stefanski said.

INJURY UPDATE: Nick Chubb

However, Chubb’s absence forced the Browns to rely heavily on Hunt, who logged 17 touches for 78 scrimmage yards before leaving with the injury.

With Hunt out, Chubb would become a true workhorse, No. 1 back in Cleveland — if healthy. However, if Chubb can’t play on Thursday, the Browns will have to rely on the likes of D’Ernest Johnson and Demetric Felton to carry the load short-term.

Johnson had just two touches (one carry, one reception) for nine yards on Sunday while Felton caught two passes for 14 yards.
